Nicole's Story—POWs

POWs/MIAs
By Nicole Miggin

Two soldiers are guarding a flag for 24 hours on the quad, they are marching in precise formation until Noon today in honor of those troops who are and any who have ever been a Prisoner of War or gone Missing in Action.

“This seems like a good way to honor our troops,” said Melanie Smith, sophomore at USU, “It reminds me of the way they guard the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington.”

The Perishing Guns Club is trying to emulate that same type of memorial here on campus. “We are doing this to cap stone our clubs first semester at USU,” said Jake Rindlisbacher, Bag Piper and Cadet in the Air Force ROTC at USU, “Its how we welcome new members.” The Perishing Guns are a break off of the Air Force Color Guard here at USU. They are part of a national society that focuses on serving the community and rifle competitions said Kirk Smith, Cadet in the Air Force ROTC at USU.

This is the end of their first semester and they have already organized two service projects to keep Logan clean and to help the elderly with yard work. They have also served the USU campus already “We did half time shows for the basketball games,” said Rindlisbacher, “You know we are the ones that spin guns.”

“The main staple of this organization are the guns. So throughout the year we will do fund raisers so that we can buy our guns for competition n,” said Smith. Every member of this organization is a volunteer and the Perishing Guns get no outside funding so their fundraisers are really important because their guns are “freaking expensive” according to the cadets.

As they wrap up their year with the memorial on the quad the soldiers are hoping that USU students will remember to “recognize and appreciate our troops” said Rindlisbacher.
