What kind of opinion are you needing? What specifically?
Any opinion would be taken into account! I just want people's thoughts about the issue.
I have a few gay/lesbian friends. Of course their sexuality doesn't matter toward being friends or not. I just barely found out one of my close friends I grew up with is practicing lesbianism now. I'll admit, it makes me think back and attempt to put puzzle pieces together. I feel bad doing that because it's really not any of my business. But I think that's a part of processing.
I also served an LDS mish in L.A., which you probably all know by now...
I've got lots and lots of stories about meeting/teaching people involved with homosexuality in various circumstances. I could tell you a few stories about various experiences I had, and people whose lives I got a glimpse into. Among them:
- a older (50ish) man we met at his door told us was very emotional--like he was in agony--when he told us he knew he would not be welcome at our church because was gay. He said he was miserable because he knew it could be "overcome" but he didn't believe he himself could do it. This man we JUST met, who knew nothing about our church, stood there in tears telling us he didn't want "this temptation" anymore and it took everything out of him, trying to live with it day to day.
- an LDS RM (Returned Missionary) flight attendant who lives homosexually. We went over to meet him because he was on our list of people who were less active in the church. He was really surprised to see us but he let us in and he told us stories about his mission, with his female roommate. We didn't see him much because he was so busy, but he was super friendly and willing to socialize with other members of the church.
- this incredible man in Hollywood who had lived a homosexual life for years, and was embracing the lessons the Sister missionaries taught him. He is HIV positive, and loves the LDS gospel and really wants to live it. He had made changes and was trying very had to follow LDS teachings. He was going to get baptized. I don't know what he's up to currently because my mission ended, but I could find out.
- of course, advocates of homosexuality yelled in our faces, called us bigots, and slammed their doors at us over the issue.
There are also many LDS members who openly feel same-gender attraction and refuse to participate in any homosexual activity.
Anyway, this is just some of what I saw and heard. Please don't anyone be offended. Satenik, I can definitely give you stories from the perspective of homosexuality pertaining to the LDS church. Just give me a call or email me if you would like more. maryapril@gmail.com
I've also lived with a Samoan transvestite in Hawaii. In Polynesian culture, people are much less critical of gender identity. In fact, they are generally allowed to explore their gender identity as they grow up--young boys try on their mothers clothes, for example. For more info, you can search "fa'afa'fine" or a variation on the word.
I personally believe American culture expects people to box themselves up and label themselves way too much.
Also, I don't know why it was, but from my first day in the Missionary Training Center, the more "feminine" Elders were always drawn to me, and they are some of my best friends to this day.
I have gay friends. Do i agree with homosexuality? No, but Everyone has the freedom to be who they want to be.
Don't know if you are still looking for comments, but here's mine if you need it. I try to be pretty accepting and friendly to all, but I could never picture myself being close friends with a person who classifies themselves as homosexual. Simply becuase all of my friends are very similar to me in their likes/dislikes and I don't think I could ever understand the mind set of gay people.
